Intermittently Scanned Continuous Glucose Monitoring

Indication

Diabetes monitoring

Reason for decision: A specialist clinician or the clinician who oversees the patient’s diabetes care still needs to determine a patient’s eligibility. When a patient satisfies the eligibility criteria, ongoing supplies of sensors can now be prescribed by GPs. The initiating clinician must have received appropriate training on the initiation and use of flash glucose monitoring products and will supply the patient with a scanning device and sensors to cover the initial 2 weeks of use of flash glucose monitoring.

Background

NHS England have now launched the national criteria for accessing Flash Glucose Monitors, such as the FreeStyle Libre®. This has been done to unify patient access to these devices across the country.
All 8 Clinical Commissioning Groups in Lancashire and South Cumbria have adopted the national criteria and have retained the existing local criteria for use of Flash Glucose Monitoring in children who require third parties to carry out monitoring and where conventional blood testing is not possible.
A specialist clinician or the clinician who has specific responsibility for the patient’s diabetes care must determine a patient’s eligibility. When a patient satisfies the eligibility criteria, ongoing supplies of sensors can now be prescribed by GPs
The initiating clinician must have received appropriate training on the initiation and use of flash glucose monitoring products and will supply the patient with a scanning device and sensors to cover the initial 2 weeks of use of flash glucose monitoring.
It should be noted that only the criteria for Flash Glucose Monitors has been amended; the eligibility criteria for Continuous Glucose Monitoring remains unchanged.
The amended policy is available to view on the link below.
