LSC Formulary Consultation

Lancashire and South Cumbria Medicines Management Group has undertaken to produce a single Lancashire and South Cumbria joint formulary by May 2024.

Aim:

To harmonise legacy formularies across all places and Trusts within Lancashire and South Cumbria ICS to improve the quality, safety and value of prescribing.

This is a not a new formulary, it will combine the legacy formularies from Morecambe Bay, Central Lancashire, ELMMB and Fylde Coast.

Process to date:

The formulary subgroup has gathered clinical specialists to discuss the therapeutic areas to agree convergence and ensure previous areas of difference such as RAG ratings are aligned.

The five areas of highest prescribing have been prioritised for detailed review by clinical reference groups these are considered fully reviewed.

  • Chapters with 68% spend: Cardiovascular system (16%), Endocrine system (16%), Respiratory system (12%) & Gastrointestinal system (7%).
  • The formulary will adopt the LSCFT Formulary for psychotropic medicines making up the majority of CNS (15%).

An accelerated process has been used for the remaining chapters which aims to have a development version of the single Lancashire and South Cumbria joint formulary that has aligned RAG ratings, removed obsolete medicines, and aligned treatment options.

Consultation feedback

We welcome feedback for all formulary sections that have been developed.

  • Those using the accelerated process will be clearly marked as being under development.
  • The cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal and endocrine sections will have been fully developed using the clinical specialist process so we expect fewer comments or queries.
  • Please note, the process is a consolidation of existing RAG positions so we cannot address any new RAG position requests via the formulary development process.

We are particularly interested in identifying any areas that could cause immediate concern.  Issues could include:

  • a hospital only drug in one area is allowed under shared care in another and this could cause confusion about prescribing responsibilities.
  • If the associated prescribing support materials linked to the web site are acceptable, in date and relevant.

The formulary is available here: https://www.lancashireandsouthcumbriaformulary.nhs.uk/chapters.asp

The consultation will take place over a 4 week period from 23 February to 22 March 2024.

Who can send feedback?

This consultation is open to feedback from staff and clinicians employed by NHS commissioned care.

N.B. No feedback will be accepted form the pharmaceutical industry except to correct factual inaccuracies
